Fever and Teething

So Sunday at lunch time, I noticed Aaron wasn't eating much. I checked his temperature and it was a little over 100. I put him down for a nap, anxious that he was getting sick, hoping it wasn't the new flu going around. When he woke up, he didn't quite seem himself and his temperature was over 101. By bedtime it had climbed to around 103. We gave him Tylenol before bed and checked on him a few times before we went to bed. We turned on the monitor in our room because he had seemed to be breathing rapidly and we were worried about breathing problems if he did have the flu.

I couldn't sleep. Every time he made a sound, my adrenaline shot up. It was an over reation, but I couldn't help it. I always worry more at night, too, so that didn't help. At 2:30, he woke up crying. I went in to him and he said "fall", which usually means a pacifier fell. But he had his pacifiers (he gets 3 at night, one to suck on and one for each hand). When I asked what had fallen, he said "shoes". So I was worried he was delerious (although he may just have been dreaming or recalling a time his shoes fell from the shoe rack). His temp was up over 103, so we gave him more Tylenol and put him down. But about 10 minutes later, he was crying again. Even though he didn't ask for food, I thought he might be hungry since he hadn't eaten much for dinner.

We got him up and let him have some milk and dry cereal. He chatted a little but didn't seem delerious, so I felt better. He went back down around 3am and slept until nearly 7am. I managed to get some sleep at that point.

On Monday morning, I had a prenatal checkup and since our nanny Kim wanted to avoid getting sick (I didn't blame her), Thom stayed home with Aaron while I went. He had a mild fever Monday morning, but not enough to give him more Tylenol. He took a morning nap and an afternoon nap and by afternoon, his temperature was under 100.

Tuesday morning, his fever was still gone, so Kim came to watch him. He never developed any other symptoms, other than lack of appetite and being excessively tired those 2 days.

Starting maybe a day or two before the fever, he seemed to be teething more. One of his 2 year molars had made an appearance several weeks ago on the top left, but he has 3 more to go. He was putting his fingers in his mouth a lot and drooling more than usual. (I figured putting his fingers in his mouth is what helped him to get sick.) Yesterday, after his nap, he was acting like his mouth hurt. I looked inside and sure enough, another molar had erupted on the bottom left side, and later, I realized there was a new molar on the bottom right side as well.

There is anecdotal evidence that kids get fevers when they are teething. But there are very authoritarian statements online and in parenting books that teething NEVER causes fever and that fever means there is a viral infection. After this last experience, though, where Aaron had fever followed by no other viral symptoms, but followed by the eruption of 2 new molars, I can see where the anecdotal evidence comes from.

Ha! I always wonder who those people who come to my blog via a google search are...but here I am googling teething and fever at midnight and found this post. I'm thinking my guy is having the same problem. His temp was just 102.5, which apparently wouldn't be from teething, but I saw his tooth cut through yesterday and just noticed it is through a lot more now. I guess we'll see how the rest of the night goes :(

Well,us too. Our 17 month old had a fever reaching 102.5 and by morning, had a new molor and barely any fever at all. My doctor says what all docs seem to say, "teething doesn't cause fever". My mother, who is 80 and had six kids, said that when we were growing up the doctor actually warned her not to worry but to expect a fever when the kids were teething. I wonder what happened to change doctors minds. I am convinced that fever accompanies cutting new teeth.

Isn't that interesting, I am up waiting for the nurse to call me back (googled and got here too). My 11 month old, who has yet to cut any teeth, has spent the last two days irritable, not eating, and warm. I finally checked her temperature and it was 103! I had no idea it was that high. No other symptoms. Her teeth look like they're ready to burst out too. I also wonder why researchers/doctors say that there is no fever when teeth erupt. Now if only someone would call us back...

Generally the doctor will tell you there is no fever associated with teething to avoid people giving their kids paracetamol too frequently. In my experience teething is always associated with a fever. 18 month old is even now feverish and refusing to eat as her canines come in.

My daughter is 18 months old and is cutting teeth top and bottom. The bottom had broke through a few days ago, the top are almost there. She had been fine all day and all the sudden she felt feverish. I have taken her temp and it's 102.5! Oh my- I really think teething has a lot to do with fevers. I gave her motrin and I hope she doesn't come down with something. It always seems like her immunity system is low while she is getting teeth in. Poor kids!

Well, our story is the same, but our son is getting his six year old molars in [two on the bottom -- he is 7 years and 1 month]. He began to feel tired on Friday morning, his temp was 100, then by Friday night it was 102. Today, no other symptoms, no fever all day, and now as he headed to bed, 100, again. This is exactly what happened EVERY time he was teething as an infant/toddler. He is REALLY EXCITED to go to camp for a week, and it starts tomorrow ... with the flu scare at camps this summer he may not be able to attend -- he'll be crushed, all of his older cousins are set to go. Wish us luck!!

Good luck anonymous! What a shame if your son couldn't go to camp due to teething. And I hope it isn't flu.

I did the same thing, although I'm not sure why I googled "fever with cutting new molars" because after having 6 children myself, I shouldn't second guess myself, even though doctor's now say that fever isn't associated with cutitng new teeth. Most recently, my 23 mo. old has had no other symptoms besides the fever and acts fine during the day. He has been chewing on his fingers and has been drooling a lot! I have yet to see any new teeth, but will be surprised if I don't see them very soon. `

our 13 month old has her upper and lower molar on the right side with no symptoms of teething. We had no idea that she was teething. Then 2 days ago she began to feel warm, low grade fever of 99-100. Along with the fever she has been coughing, drooling, runny nose. All together. I took her to urgent care and they said that it is a virus. I don't know. Any other babies with the same symptoms???

Not sure which doctors are saying that teething does not cause fever, but I'm sure you've heard of Dr. Sears....here is a link on teething from his site that definitely links fever to teething.

Hope this helps. :-)

My 9 month old is feverish with runny nose, watery eyes, and little bit crabby. No one else in the house is sick. Doctors have to say teething doesn't cause fever because if someones kid has a serious problem and they just chalk it up to teething, there could be consequences.
But after 4 kids, I know the difference between a stress fever from teething and a serious problem.

Thank you so much for your blog! My little guy is 18 months and has had a reoccuring fever of 102.5 today. I was so worried! I viewed his mouth and saw 6 teeth coming in - 4 on top (two of which are molars) and 2 on the bottom. He is hurting so bad! I bought an ear infection detector and it said he was fine...I doubted it until I read your blog. Thank you for helping to calm my nerves!

Thanks for this post. I just spent the night at th er with my daughter whose fever had reached 103.8. No infection, no cough, little runny nose but nothing big. They said it was just a "virus" and now she is nawing on the plastic end of her thing that attaches her binkies to her clothes. She's 21 months so I'm sure her molars are around the corner.

I have a 19 mo old son. He had many respitory infection this last winter. But now that it is June I was confused when he started with a low grade fever 100.7 two nights ago with no there symptoms. NO runny nose cough, congestion, no pulling on his ears just a low grade fever. I watched closley yesterday and he didnt get any more fever all day long just didnt really eat his usual. Than again last night just a low grade fever again resloved with motrin. Hes just getting them at night and after seening this blog Im hoping its teething and nothing else.

I too am glad I ran across this post. I have been dealing with high fever, reaching 104 and believe that my daughter is cutting 6 year molars. I spent the night at the ER with a high fever, slight runny nose and runny eyes (clear). I believe she is getting her top molars. They tried to tell me that she had "fifth disease" for lack of a better answer. After reading about this diagnosis on the Internet....she does not have this.
She was up playing with her brother yesterday morning, and then the fever started again, and has lasted through the night. I am hoping she wakes up feeling like a champ. Wish me well.

Our lil lady is just over 2 and been showing similiar symptoms to those babes discussed on your blog. High fever...no other real symptoms....playing normally. But sleeping HORRIBLY!!!!!And tonight after dinner on closer inspection...a two year molar has reared its ugly head thru her gums! Hoping and praying for a better night tonight...wish us luck!

I am currently lying in bed with my 6 month old while my husband attends to our poor, feverish 23 month old. She was at a birthday party yesterday having the time of her life...woke up this morning in misery with a 102 degree fever. She has been off and on cranky all day with a fever as high as 103.5. I am totally at a loss of how in the world she got so sick so fast. She has no other symptoms other than crankiness. I remember with her first two teeth she had an awful fever, was sick and crying all night and day for 24 hours and then BOOM - two little teeth. I don't know why I'm doubting my instinct that it's the same situation again...probably because it's the nature of every mother to worry for her child.

my daughter is 11 months old. she started getting 4 teeth in on top 2 weeks ago. little fussy here and there nothing major. with her first set she was never fussy or ran a fever.
last night she went to bed with a 100.2 temp, and after tylenol and her bottle she slept for 10 hours. when she woke she had a slight fever 99.2 so tylenol again. for about 9-10 hours she acted fine, not fussy, no crying, nothing. but she also wouldnt eat. when she finally got fussy, i fixed her a bottle and she fell asleep. she slept for 45 minutes and we whimpering in her sleep the entire time. i gave her tylenol again because she was radating heat, she took .4 mL and threw EVERYTHING in her stomach. afterward she acted like her normal self, giggling and smiling. she fell asleep again slept for a half hour. woke up screaming likke she was dying. took her temp it was 101.9 so i gave her a cool bath (wrong idea) when we got out she was fussy as ever. while in the bath i took her temp and it had went down to 97.9, so i thought we were in the clear. but after a bottle and tylenol again her temp started going up. made it to 99.4 before the tylenol kicked in again...
so what im wondering after all this ramble is if all of this is normal. im a first time mom an have no idea if i should be sitting in the emergancy room right now getting her checked out or if this is all normal teething symthoms??? help please, i would greatly appeciate the suggestions.

I have a 5 year old son who is in the same situation as all of your children. Fever, blocked nose and telling me his gums hurt. We took him to the doctor yesterday who told us that he has no viral infections, no sore throats, no ear infection... just teething! His six year molars are trying to come through and I really hope they come out really fast as I just cannot in this state anymore... Good luck to all of you too!!!

{I goggled and ran across this site as well} My 9 month old cut his 2 bottom teeth within the last month and now has a fever of 102.7 no runny nose, he does have watery eyes and a slight cough NOTHING MAJOR! I do believe he is cutting new teeth for the fact he continuously chews on his fingers and drools like crazy. I been giving him Tylenol to keep him comfortable and keeping him hydrated(Popsicles, diluted juice) cause he is not wanting his formula or baby food.

3 years on and I'm very grateful for your post! Our 22 month old daughter has had the drooling, the red chins and the gnawing on her dummy for the last 3weeks. These symptoms still exist, and have been escalated by her crying on and off for the last two days, whilst also running a high temp. Calpol is helping but only just...

Glad to hear we are not alone!

Now going to try and have a peek in her mouth as she has managed quite well with tonight's dinner and seems much chirpier!

Usually doctors say that because they want you to make a trip up there to sit in the room a couple hours so they can make some money! That's all they care about.

My 2yr old is having similar symptoms. It's now Monday night and she's had a fever since last Thursday night. So 4 days now. It's been ranging around 102.8-103.0 ans lower. Her gums are very swollen, and she constantly points to them and says ow.. I think I may take her in, just because she keeps saying her tummy hurts.. other wise I would let it ride out on its own..

Thank goodness for you ladies and for Dr. Sears. Our flight had just taken off when I realized that my son had a fever (probably 102), was breathing rapidly, coughing and fussing with his mouth and ears. In addition, we had diarrhea at the airport (which he never has). I googled and came to this site...which was the only thing between me and a nervous breakdown on a four hour flight. His fever has broken (still on the plane) and he is resting.

I googled forever till I came here LOL my 6yr old went to bed early last night and woke up today with 102-104 fever and no appetite (taking in lots of fluids during his Pokemon XY marathon though). Tonight brushing his teeth I see 3 great big new 6yr molars introducing themselves. Alternating advil and Tylenol is bringing the fever down a little. I seem to recall this happening when he was a toddler. This is the kind of stuff we should be putting in the baby book, as a reference to for our future bleary eyed selves :-)
